Visual Arts Residency Wrap-Up

Jessica and Darius are still actually in Gorham's Bluff but they'll be heading back to their regular lives in the next day or so. We'll be sad to see them go, but the past two weeks have been such a great experience for us and (we hope!) for them. As their exhibit/reception showed (click here for the photos on our Facebook page), they've both made good use of their time by creating lots of promising new work. Their workshop students are all still inspired by the work that they were able to create as well. You can even see one of them adding to her piece during the reception!

We're certainly excited to see where Darius and Jessica take their work from here and we'll be keeping an eye out (and posting about it here on the blog) for exciting things from them.

Now we turn our attention to...the Alabama Ballet! They'll be in Gorham's Bluff starting the week of August 10, which is right around the corner. Stay tuned for more information and updates about their activities both in Gorham's Bluff and at Northeast Alabama Community College in Rainsville!

2010 Residency Artists Exhibit and Reception This Sunday, July 18 at 3 p.m. in the Meeting House

As you can probably tell by the blog posts below, we've been delighted with our inaugural visual arts residency! Our community workshops led by our residency artists, Jessica Smith and Darius Hill, have been a smashing success, and both Jessica and Darius have had the opportunity to create vibrant new work during their stay in Gorham's Bluff.

On Sunday, July 18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Gorham's Bluff Meetinghouse, we'll have a chance to get an up-close and personal look at that vibrant new work. Darius and Jessica will display the pieces they've begun during the residency and they'll be on hand for informal discussions of the work itself and of their overall artistic processes.

And, as if that wasn't enough, there will be wine and cheese and other snacks to munch on during the course of the afternoon's exhibit. The program is free and open to the public, and you can come and go as you please, so there's no reason not to drop by to see what Darius and Jessica have been up to for the last two weeks. Hope to see everyone there!

What's been great so far about Jessica's teaching and the medium of ceramics in general is the emphasis on how the firing process changes a ceramics piece. Thus, the ceramic artist always has to keep in mind that there's a significant part of the process that he or she can't totally control. But that -- of course -- is what makes it art.

Mixed Media Workshop with Gorham's Bluff Residency Artist Darius Hill: July 9-11

Darius Hill, chair of the Visual Art department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and (along with Jessica Smith [see below]) a recipient of one of the Institute's inaugural visual arts residencies this summer, will be conducting a three-day workshop in Gorham's Bluff geared toward helping artists of all levels develop a series of works in mixed media, including charcoal, acrylic paint, photo images, photocopies, text, and found objects.

Of his own work, Darius says, "I use a formal approach that allows me to abstract, to go deep into my subconscious, I guess. One line determines the next, one shape determines the next. There’s no rigid thing. I don’t have these ideas in my head and try to depict them. Things are being discovered there right there on the picture plane. You have to be open to that kind of discovery. The way I work allows for discovery. That’s just how I work."

Darius also believes working in a series is important. One thing leads to another. There’s evidence of the transition from picture to picture. As far as Darius is concerned, it's those transitions and connections that allow an artist to be most effective.

Using these principles of organic discovery and following some preliminary drawing exercises, Darius will lead a workshop of up to 20 students to discover their own creative process and preoccupations, with the ultimate goal of creating several linked pieces in mixed media.

Ceramics Workshop with Gorham's Bluff Residency Artist Jessica Smith: July 8 and July 15

In conjunction with her upcoming residency in Gorham's Bluff, ceramicist Jessica Smith of the University of West Alabama will be conducting a two-day ceramics workshop for up to 10 people of any level of experience. One great feature of Jessica's workshop is that she'll be bringing a portable kiln to Gorham's Bluff. That will allow her to fire the pieces workshoppers produce and they'll be able to pick them up at the end of her residency.

We will cover the basics of making sprigs, press-molds, and customized dies in this surface design ceramics workshop. These techniques will be put into practice as you create your own ceramic vessel during this two-day workshop. All materials for the workshop will be provided. This workshop is appropriate for individuals with any level of experience with clay. Please wear old clothes as clay can be messy.

Thursday, July 8

The group will discuss and make sprig molds, press-molds, and dies.
The group will begin work on individual pieces to be decorated during our next meeting.
Jessica will explain simple pinching and coiling handbuilding techniques to build a ceramic vessel.

Thursday, July 15

The group will apply textures and surface design to ceramic forms.
The group will finish workshop pieces with colored slip.

Fired ceramic work will be ready to be picked up after July 19.

Alabama Plein Air Artists Visit Gorham's Bluff All Day Saturday, Apr. 17 -- "Wet Canvas" Sale from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Institute is excited to welcome the Alabama Plein Air Artists (APAA) to Gorham's Bluff this Saturday. The APAA, consists of artists from all over the state who gather once a month to paint the varied landscapes of Alabama. They've painted the mountains of north Alabama, the rivers, woods and ponds of central Alabama, the Governor's garden, and the azaleas of Bellingrath Gardens.

Artists will be painting throughout the day from various vantage points outdoors, and then, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., they will hold a "Wet Canvas" sale of the work they create during the day, with prices ranging from $100 to $500 depending on the artist and the size of the piece.

Perfect spring weather, the bluff, and talented artists painting the unmatch scenery al fresco -- it's an event that promises to offer a little bit of everything that makes Gorham's Bluff unique!

2010 Gorham’s Bluff Visual Arts Residencies

The Gorham’s Bluff Institute is pleased to announce its first-ever extended residencies for the visual arts. With the support of the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Institute patrons, the Institute will host two Alabama artists, one each in June and July of this year, for two-week residencies which will allow them to create new art in a vibrant natural setting and to engage our community through workshops in their respective media.

How much trouble could a pair of shoes possibly be? Quite a bit, if they’re your sister’s and you lose them and your family has no money to replace them. This poignant Oscar-nominated Iranian film tells the story of Ali and his sister Zahra as they try to cope with the predicament of having one too few pair of shoes and, in the process, try to avoid telling their parents the truth. Along the way, Ali and Zahra learn that while there are material things their lower class life in Tehran lacks, they both have within them the means to rise above their circumstances.

We're excited to welcome Samford University professor Dr. Chris Metress, who'll be joining us to give us his two cents about the film as well.

An Inside Look at Last Week's Huntsville Master Chorale Performance in Gorham's Bluff

Here's a lyrical account of last weekend's concert by the Huntsville Master Chorale from Sara McDaris, a longtime friend of Gorham's Bluff and a member of the Chorale:

"It was a glorious day, a sacred day.

"After a week of cloudy skies and hard rain, the weather had changed. The morning sun laved the white, blossoming clouds with a golden hue. The sky verged on October blue. A refreshing cool breeze hinted at the cooler days to come.

"We drove across the Tennessee valley at midday, crossed the river and climbed up the mountain. Our trek took us through small villages and uninhabited land, scrub country really. Suddenly we turned through two columns and we entered a different world. We had reached the Bluff. Driving slowly, we absorbed the landscape, the fairy houses, the lake, and finally, up ahead, the meeting house.

"We could see that some of our companions were already there. Handsome men in their elegant tuxedoes stood talking to lovely women in long black dresses, the refreshing breeze gently moving their full skirts.

"We gathered in the meeting house, absorbing the beauty, the architecture, the resonance of the interior. Piano music began to soar through the hall, rising up to the rafters, foretelling how we would sound. For we were singers. We had made the journey to gather together to sing. Something sacred is in that.

"As we mingled and absorbed the loveliness of our surroundings, joy and anticipation filled our conversations. No hurry, no anxiety, but a relaxed confidence permeated the group. It would be a sacred singing.

"Finally, we began to collect ourselves and bring order to our delightful chaos. We mounted the risers, and began making those decidedly unlovely sounds that warm up a voice. We would be past that quickly and move to the magnificent music we had so carefully prepared to sing.

"The Bluff hosts arrived, welcoming us, catering to our needs.

"The people arrived, our listeners.

"It was time. We lined up on the steps, and suddenly became, instead of thirty five individual people, a unit of one, each part fulfilling its role.

"The glorious morning had moved to a brilliant afternoon filled with wondrous music.
The unity of the group held, the choral sounds soaring up to the high roof and swirling there. We sang with our bodies, our minds and our hearts.

"We sang. It was a sacred moment.

"As we started down the mountain, we experienced coming down an emotional mountain as well. The pink and pearly sunset guided us as we again crossed the valley to home."

We wholeheartedly concur! It was a great day and many thanks to all the HMC members who treated us to a wonderful concert.

A September to Remember for the Institute

Lots of goings-on going on over the course of the next few weeks: we'll have Beth Young and John C. Hall in next weekend (Sunday, September 20) to talk about their fascinating new book, Headwaters: A Journey on Alabama Rivers. Young's an award-winning conservation photographer and Hall's the former curator of the Museum of Natural History at the University of Alabama and they've teamed up to produce a book any nature lover in Alabama will want to own.

Also next weekend (Saturday, September 19), we're kicking off our new Beanbag Movie Series in the Meeting House with the classic date movie, When Harry Met Sally. We'll be screening a movie a month, with the highlight being an evening in January with Dr. Chris Metress of Samford University where we screen and dissect a classic film. (We'll build up the suspense a little as to what the movie's going to be -- check back over the fall to get the update!)

Admission to both of the above events is free. Headwaters will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

Then on Sunday, September 27, we'll host the Huntsville Master Chorale to perform their newest concert, “Sure on this Shining Night,” a set of musical compositions about the beauty and enchantment of evening.

Tickets for the concert are $12 ($10 for Institute members; $5 for students), with half the proceeds to benefit the chorale and half to benefit the Gorham’s Bluff Institute.

Malcolm Gladwell Chimes in on the Literary Fate of Atticus Finch in This Week's New Yorker

Here's a thought-provoking extension of the conversation we had in Gorham's Bluff earlier this year during our To Kill a Mockingbird weekend with Dr. Chris Metress. In this week's New Yorker, cultural critic extraordinaire Malcolm Gladwell (Blink, Outliers, The Tipping Point, etc) pens a consideration of Atticus Finch and 20th-century Southern Liberalism as the book celebrates its 50th Anniversary. Gladwell frames the debate in much the same terms as we did back in January, and while he doesn't seem to come to any earth-shattering new conclusions, it's an interesting read for people who know and love the book, especially if you were with us in January. (As a sidenote, you can expect more programs like our TKM weekend in the coming months!)

Institute Adds Friends-Level Membership

The Institute is a big part of what makes Gorham's Bluff special. This year, we're celebrating our 15th Anniversary of continuous arts and cultural programming. That sort of longevity is no small feat for any nonprofit entity, but we can't rest on our laurels. While the current economic climate has added a significant challenge, we know the show must go on! Like many nonprofits around the country, we're relying on individual contributions more than ever this year.

Alabama Ballet Summer Residency in Gorham's Bluff Just Two Weeks Away!

We're gearing up for another exciting installment of the Institute's signature event, The Alabama Ballet's Summer Residency in Gorham's Bluff. Please note that the residency is scheduled a little bit later this year so Ballet members can work directly with area public schools during the residency. A special note of thanks goes to the Alabama State Council on the Arts, which has provided funding to help us expand our outreach activities this year.

Bluffside Patrons Dinner & Performances
Friday, August 14 and Saturday, August 15 at 7 p.m.

Celebrating thirteen years in Gorham's Bluff, the Summer Residency will once again bring top-quality professional dancers to northeast Alabama for local outreach activities and performances. The Ballet uses the residency to challenge dancers in new roles, stretch the company's choreography, and share behind-the-scenes insights with appreciative audiences during these one-of-a-kind performances. And back by popular demand, a chartered bus from the Ballet's studios in downtown Birmingham will be available each night. The gourmet buffet dinner begins at 7:00 p.m. and the performance follows at 8:00 p.m.

Dance Discovery
Thursday, August 13 at 7 p.m.

The Alabama Ballet has always used its unique summer residency in Gorham's Bluff to stoke the imaginative fire in young people throughout northeast Alabama. Dance Discovery allows company dancers to share with area kids the rich history of ballet along with some of its fundamental terms and techniques. Immediately following Dance Discovery in Gorham's Bluff, workshop attendees will be treated to a free preview dress rehearsal of the residency's weekend performances. There is no charge for workshop attendees or their parents.

We've decided it's time for a new tradition, one that combines the beauty of a summer evening in Gorham's Bluff with an art form everybody loves: movies. Just like that, Summer Movie Classics in Gorham's Bluff is born.

On alternating Saturdays from now through Labor Day weekend ,we'll be showing a great summer movie at a great summer price: free! Just bring your favorite lawn chair to the Amphitheater and be ready to enjoy the rare opporunity to see some all-time favorites on a big screen again.

Our next Summer Movie Classic will be American Graffiti on August 8, followed by The Muppet Movie on August 22, and we'll finish the season on September 5, Labor Day Weekend, with Dirty Dancing. (See below for movie descriptions.)

Not sure what it is with the weather for the last couple of outdoor Institute events: rain threatens right around the time to set up so caution proves the better part of valor and we move to the Meeting House, only to have the sun peek through the clouds at showtime and stay there for the rest of the afternoon. Oh well. The Meeting House -- with its fabulous acoustics -- is great in its own right for any musical show, and Huntsville's Microwave Dave and The Nukes took full advantage of it. Two full sets with a great mix of originals and classic Blues tunes that filled the room and then some!

For the past three years, the Institute and its longtime partner, the Alabama Ballet, have been pleased to expand the Ballet's summer residency in Gorham's Bluff by teaming with the Northeast Alabama Community College to offer workshops and performances on the NACC campus each summer.

As a natural offshoot of this great partnership, we're now pleased to offer an exciting new opportunity for ballet lovers in Jackson County. On Saturday, February 21, the Institute and NACC will charter a bus to transport a group of patrons to Birmingham for dinner and a night at the Ballet's much-anticipated upcoming performance of Cinderella. Best of all, transportation to and from the event is free with the purchase of a ticket at the regular price of admission!

The group will leave the NACC parking lot at 2:30 pm on Saturday and arrive at Brio Italian restaurant for dinner at 5:00 p.m. Following the meal, the group will head to the ballet performance, which begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Wright Center on the nearby campus of Samford University.

Once at the performance, the party will receive VIP treatment: they will be greeted and escorted to their seats in the orchestra section, and after the performance, the group will be taken backstage to meet and greet company dancers and artistic staff.

The bus, stocked with evening snacks and refreshments, will leave the Wright Center immediately after the backstage visits and arrive back at NACC around 11:00 p.m. -- well before it has any chance to turn into a pumpkin!

We know that many friends and fans of Gorham's Bluff hail from Birmingham, so we keep an eye on the happenings there -- especially in the arts community. We were certainly excited to read this upbeat blogpost by the Birmingham News arts reporter, Michael Heubner, about the Alabama Symphony Orchestra's upcoming season. Even more encouraging, ASO Executive Director Curt Long says ticket sales and fundraising are both brisk. Now more than ever, those who love the arts need to support them. It's gratifying to know our friends in the Magic City are doing just that!

TKM Weekend Recap

Our To Kill a Mockingbird mini-Renaissance weekend was a huge success, if we do say so ourselves. Great time had by all. Saturday evening's film viewing -- on a big screen in the Meeting House with a beanbag chair, popcorn, and movie staples (Raisinets, Whoppers, etc) for everybody! -- was a great way to spend a chilly January evening with forty friends, neighbors, and fellow Deep Thinkers. Then Sunday's lecture and panel discussion was the perfect complement to provoke further thought about the film, the book, and the issues they present. Many thanks to all who participated, including our guests Dr. Chris Metress, Dr. Horace Huntley, and Dr. Mark Baggett.

New Urbanism Outside the Nation's Capital

A recent edition of NPR's All Things Considered featured a story on Tysons Corner, Virginia. The suburb of Washington, D.C., is a classic case of urban sprawl, and developers are planning to do something about it. Pull quote:

The car-dominated city is the product of policies and subsidies that favored drivable suburban development, [says Chris Leinberger, a developer turned academic and urbanist who is now at the Brookings Institution].

NACC Community Showcase on December 7!

Ring in the holiday season on Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 p.m. as the Gorham’s Bluff Institute welcomes two award-winning musical ensembles from Northeast Alabama Community College: The Northeast Jazz Band, a 29-piece band of NACC students and community musicians under the direction of Dr. Daniel C. Knox, and ENCORE!, NACC’s audition-only harmony singing group, under the direction of Dr. Kathy Adkins.

Both ensembles will perform songs from their regular repertoires as well as renditions of some of your favorite seasonal tunes, including Baby It’s Cold Outside, Frosty the Snowman, Let it Snow and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, featuring jazz band vocalist Jessica Headrick from Fyffe.

“The Community Showcase is always one of our favorite events of the year,” says Gorham’s Bluff Program Director Laura Lawrence. “It gives us a chance to celebrate the season and honor the artistic achievements of people right here in Jackson County.”

Whenever he's asked when he became a poet, Charles Ghigna is tempted to reply, "When did you stop?" As far as Ghigna is concerned, poetry is a natural part of our lives. It's not just something we have to memorize and recite in front of a class. Losing ourselves in a poem is one of the best ways of finding out who we are. The act of writing brings us to that point of discovery. Ghigna -- a.k.a. "Father Goose" -- is the author of more than 5,000 poems and 40 award-winning children's books. His books have been featured on ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" and NPR, selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Parents' Choice Book Award. The Institute is excited to present an event that blends three of our favorite things: Blues, classical music, and creative innovation! The Classical-Blues Cabaret began on June 17, 2004 as an experimental collaboration between two accomplished Alabama guitarists who have performed all over the world. On that night, Blues guitarist and Huntsville radio personality Microwave Dave Gallaher joined forces with the accomplished classical guitarist Phil Weaver to present a cabaret performance at Huntsville's Flying Monkey Arts Center. They rocked the packed house and haven't looked back. Since then the duo has played to many more standing-room-only shows at the Flying Monkey, and the Alabama Film Co-op recently produced a live concert DVD to promote this unique and crowd-pleasing blend of musical styles. Building on its growing success, the Cabaret has added accompaniment by pianist Ingrid von Spakovsky, receiving standing ovations at both the Birmingham City Stages Festival and Huntsville's City Lights and Stars series.

An opthalmologist by trade, Birmingham classical pianist Drew Mays recently made a big splash in the world of classical music by winning first prize in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in June of 2007. Culminating a fifteen-year journey that took Mays from the Manhattan School of Music to a long hiatus during which he did not play at all, the Van Cliburn win portends many great things to come for this talented Alabama musician.

You'll want to act fast to reserve your tickets -- Mays's January performance at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham sold out, and he's generating quite a buzz throughout the state and beyond. Join us for the first event of the Institute's 2007-08 season, as Bluegrass musicians Louisa Branscomb and Friends perform in the Gorham's Bluff amphitheatre (if it's too hot, we'll move to the Meeting House!) on Sunday, Sep 2 at 3 p.m.

Bluegrass singer-songwriter Louisa Branscomb has been writing songs since she was six and playing and writing professionally for 36 years. She's been pushing the bluegrass envelope since the early 1970s, when she co-founded one of the first modern all-female bluegrass bands, Bluegrass Liberation. Not long after that, she bucked tradition once again when she became one of the first women to front a bluegrass band and play banjo, which she did with a band called Boot Hill from 1972 to 1980.

It's no wonder that veteran Bluegrass promoter Lance Leroy has called Louisa “always 20 years ahead of her time.”

During a career that's spanned more than three decades, Branscomb has performed lead vocals and played the guitar, banjo, and mandolin, but she is perhaps most recognized for her extraordinary songwriting talent. More than 70 of her songs have been recorded, leading to two Grammy cuts. Her best known song, “Steel Rails,” appeared on Alison Krauss’ Grammy-winning album, “I’ve Got That Old Feeling” in 1991. With Krauss, “Steel Rails” became the longest running No. 1 song on the bluegrass charts.

Louisa has invited three of her favorite singer-songwriters and musician friends to accompany her in Gorham's Bluff (creating what she's billing as an "acoustic quilt of unmatched musical creativity!"): Irene Kelley, and Brian Ashley Jones, and bassist Tish Simeral.

Today, members of the Alabama Ballet conducted fun -- and vigorous! -- workshops for young dance students in the area at Northeast Alabama Community College in Rainsville. Maybe you're a budding (pun intended, thank you very much) environmentalist, but you don't know much about the great outdoors.

You're not alone.

Seems like these days, what with "inconvenient truths" swirling about like so many climate-change tornadoes, we're all a little more conscious about being in tune with the natural world. And yet many of us need to be caught up to speed on what's what out there where the wild things are. (Two points if you knew that was goldenseal up there to the left.)

Well, here's a first step: a photo album of plants native to northeast Alabama, courtesy of one of the Institute's favorite partners in cultural advancement, the Northeast Alabama Community College. These photos were taken when the Native Plants Society of Northeast Alabama planted some of these native varieties at NACC's walking trail. (Extra credit if you can identify one or two of the people in the photos!)

And don't forget our upcoming weekend in early June with noted naturalist and storyteller, Doug Elliott. June 9, it's Storytelling Around the Campfire on The Bluff at night (not to be missed). GORHAM'S BLUFF TO HOST JACKSON COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TOURNEY!

For the third year in a row, the Gorham's Bluff Institute is pleased to welcome the Jackson County Middle School Math Tournament to The Bluff in the first three days in May. The only event of its kind in the county, the JCMS Math Tournament runs these young mathematicians through some pretty rigorous paces: a full day of testing in subjects such as Algebra and Geometry, followed by "Jeopardy-style" ciphering, where contestants race against a clock and each other to come up with correct answers to a variety of complex math problems. Just one more way the Gorham's Bluff Institute helps Gorham's Bluff help the community at large. IRAN STILL IN THE NEWS

We're gearing up for Dr. James Brown's lecture this Sunday, Apr 1, on the recent history of U.S. relations with Iran and, as if on cue, a new source of conflict between Iran and the West has cropped up. This time the conflict is between Iran and Great Britain, as fifteen British soldiers were captured in the Persian Gulf and are being held by the Iranian government. Stories don't match up: Iran says the British marines were seized in Iranian waters; the UK says they were off the coast of Iraq. [See the Associated Press map to the above-left.] Iran says it has proof, as does the British government. There's some thought that Iran might be looking to trade the soldiers for a group of Iranians who were captured in Iraq last year. This will likely reach a peaceful conclusion, but it underscores the tensions underlying just about all international policy decisions these days, especially in that corner of the world. SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION: HITCHCOCK AND... GONE WITH THE WIND?

Alfred Hitchcock was responsible for a lot of great films during his career, but it was none other than David O. Selznick -- famed producer-director of Gone with the Wind -- who brought the portly, gifted young Englishman to Hollywood so that he could get his start in the big leagues. The rest, as they say, is history. Hitchcock and Selznick worked together on some classics, including Rebecca (1940) and Spellbound (1945), before the pairing succumbed to a time-honored Tinseltown tradition: "creative differences." LOOKING FOR AN ALTERNATIVE TO FAST FOOD?

What about Slow Food? Extolling the values of sustainability, diversity, and the simple pleasures of life, Slow Food USA is an organization committed to changing the way we eat and live. Here's an excerpt from the organization's website:

The founding father of the Slow Food Movement, Carlo Petrini, recognized in 1986 that the industrialization of food was standardizing taste and leading to the annihilation of thousands of food varieties and flavors. Concerned that the world was quickly reaching a point of no return, he wanted to reach out to
consumers and demonstrate to them that they have choices over fast food and supermarket homogenization. He rallied his friends and began to speak out at every available opportunity and soon the movement was born and Slow Food was created. Today the organization is active in 50 countries and has a worldwide membership of over 80,000.

And living the "Slow Life" is not as exotic or difficult as you might think. According to the Slow Food folks, here are a few simple things you can do today:

Visit a local farmers' market.

Invite a friend over to share a meal.

Trace your food sources.

Visit a farm in your area.

Create a new food memory for a child! Let her plant seeds or have him harvest greens for a meal.

Start a kitchen garden.

Learn your local food history! Find a food that is celebrated as being originally from or best grown/produced in your part of the country.

IRAN LECTURE AROUND THE CORNER!

Here are a couple of things to check out in preparation for our upcoming lecture about U.S. relations with Iran:

- NBC News correspondent Ian Williams writes on WorldBlog about festivities surrounding the Persian New Year, which takes place this year on Mar 21.

- It's not just the governments of Iran and the United States that are sparring. Hollywood's jumping into the fray as well. Take a look at this article on MSNBC.com. It touches on a new American film, 300, that is based on a comic-book fantasy version of the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., in which a force of 300 Spartans held off a massive Persian army at a mountain pass in Greece for three days. Here's a segment of the article:

In Iran, the movie hasn’t opened and probably never will, given the government’s restrictions on Western films, though one paper said bootleg DVDs were already available.
Still, it touched a sensitive nerve. Javad Shamghadri, cultural adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said the United States tries to “humiliate” Iran in order to reverse historical reality and “compensate for its wrongdoings in order to provoke American soldiers and warmongers” against Iran.
The movie comes at a time of increased tensions between the United States and Iran over the Persian nation’s nuclear program and the Iraq war.
But aside from politics, the film was seen as an attack on Persian history, a source of pride for Iranians across the political spectrum, including critics of the current Islamic regime.

MORE U.S.-IRAN SPARRING IN THE NEWS

Just keeping track of the movements in U.S.-Iran relations, it seems things are proceeding along the lines of more-of-the-same: agitation and conflict pushing toward some sort of head. What form that head might take -- all-out sanctions, military action, true diplomacy -- is anybody's guess. GORHAM'S BLUFF LECTURE SERIES STARTS THIS SUNDAY!

If you've got family roots on Sand Mountain, you won't want to miss what the Institute's got planned this weekend. BLUES CAFE A SMASH HIT!

They must have heard us all the way to Scottsboro. Heck, they probably heard us all the way in Clarksdale, MS, what with the way sound carries off The Bluff! The Alabama Blues Project and special guest Caroline Shines rocked the Meetinghouse yesterday afternoon with some old Blues standards like "Got My Mojo Working" and "Hey Bo Diddley" along with a few of Caroline's own originals. Lots of buzz to get the Blues Project back in Gorham's Bluff, so keep an ear to the ground -- a funky Blues bassline might be calling you back to the Meetinghouse for a return engagement in the not-too-distant future.
